Abstract Introduction: Palasha Kshar Bhavit Pippali Churna is an Ayurvedic formulations prescribed as Rasayansa and used in the management of respiratory disorders. Pharmacognostical study accounting powder microscopy of raw drug exposed the quality and genuineness of all the constituents. Aim: To evaluate the pharmacognostical and physicochemical characters of Palasha Kshar Bhavit Pippali Churna. Materials & Methods: The finished product is collected from pharmacy of the institute and authenticated from the laboratory of the same institute. Standard procedures were followed to undertake pharmacognostical and physico-chemical analysis. The Palasha Kshar Bhavit Pippali Churna subjected to microscopic evaluation, physicochemical analysis like loss on drying, ash value, pH value, water soluble extract, alcohol soluble extract, High Performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) etc. Results: Pharmacognostical study showed the presence of certain identifying characters of both of the ingredients in the preparation like Segment of epicarp cells of Pippali, Segment of fibre of Pippali, Crystalline bodies, Oil globule, Simple starch grains, Oleoresin contents of Pippali, Rhombhoidal crystal and Rodshaped crystal of Palasha Kshar. Preliminary physico-chemical analysis showed that pH value 5, ash value 6.77% w/w, loss on drying 5.42% w/w, water soluble extract 36.90% w/w, methanol soluble extract 8.16% w/w and HPTLC showed ten spots at 254nm and nine spots at 366nm. Discussion: The Pharmacognostical study comprised of organoleptic study and microscopic study of finished product alongwith physico-chemical analysis finds out authenticity of ingredient of the Presence of both raw content in the finished product shows genuineness of the product. Conclusion: Presented work was carried out to standardize the finished product Palasha Kshar Bhavit Pippali Churna in terms of its identity, quality and purity. Pharmacognostical and Physico-chemical observations showed the specific characters of both active constituents in the formulation and will be helpful as reference guidance for future scientific evaluation of the drug as there is no reported study till date as per scholar’s knowledge.
