DE QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITIS: A CASE REVIEW OF THE REHABILITATIVE OPTIONS W.S.R. TO AGNIKARMA

Abstract

De Quervain’s tenosynositis is a condition which involves tendons entrapment affecting the first dorsal compartment of the wrist, with this condition thickening of the tendon sheaths around the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis develops where the tendons pass in through the fibro-osseous tunnel located along the radial styloid at the distal wrist. It occurs at a point about 3.25 cm above the tip of the radial styloid process. It is on the lateral aspect of the lower end of the radius where the tendons lie in shallow bony groove. A case study approach was utilized in these articles to demonstrate many of the available occupational therapy modalities to treat this condition. A 72- year- old left hand male who works in a daycare facility presents with radial side wrist pain during lifting activity for the past 3 months. The patient was diagnosed with De Quervain’s tenosynositis and conservative care was initiated. Conservative care involved antiinflammtory medication and occupational therapy to include splinting, activity modification, modalities, therapeutic exercise, manual treatment and in Ayurveda, Agnikarma therapy present. The Agnikarma word made up with combination of two words – Agni and Karma i.e. fire and procedure and the procedure done by Agni for treating a disease.
