Abstract The medicinal property of plant leaves lies in their component phytochemicals which produce the definite physiological actions on human body. The most of these phytochemicals are alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and phenolic. This present study evaluated bioactive compounds of alkaloid and tannin fraction of Newbouldia laevis leaves using GC-MS analysis. The chemical compositions were investigated using Agilent GC-MS, 7890A coupled with MDS 5975C. All the solvent and chemicals used for the extraction of alkaloid and tannin from Newbouldia laevis were of analytical grades. The alkaloid fraction revealed Tetraacetyldxylonic nitrile (1.541%), 3,3- iminobispropylamine (3.004%), 3-(N-acetyl-N-methylamino) propionic acid 4.060%) and 2- amino-1-(o-hydroxyphenyl) propane (1.728%) while Tannin fraction revealed stigmasterol (4.09%), 9,19 cycloergost- 24(28) en-3-ol (10.96%), 9,19 cyclolanost-24-en-3-ol (13.82%), Curan-17-oic acid, 2,16-didehydro-20-hydroxy-19-oxo-, methyl ester (15.15%), Among other non-alkaloid and tannin bioactive compound. The alkaloid and tannin bioactive compounds revealed by GC-MS have been reported to have pharmacological potency which could be responsible for the therapeutic effect of Newbouldia laevis leaves.
