AN OVERVIEW ON FAST DISSOLVING TABLET

Abstract Fast dissolving drug delivery systems were developed as an alternative to tablets, capsules and syrups for people experiencing difficulty in swallowing traditional solid dosage forms. These dosage forms disintegrate or dissolve quickly in few seconds after placement in the mouth without water can alleviate the problem of swallowing tablets. They offer substantial advantages over ordinary tablets. Fast dissolving drug delivery systems are defined as oral drug delivery systems that dissolve or disintegrate within seconds to few minutes after placement in the mouth and do not require water to aid swallowing. This fast dissolving system includes tablets, caplets, granules, films, wafers and powders. The development of these dosage forms also provides an opportunity for a line extension in the marketplace. A wide range of drugs (e.g. neuroleptics, cardiovascular drugs, analgesics, antihistamines) can be considered candidates for this dosage form. The aim of this article is to review the development of FDTs, challenges in formulation, suitability of drug candidates, new FDT technologies and evaluation methodologies and future prospects.
