ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITY OF EMERGING MEDICINAL PLANTS – A SHORT REVIEW

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide emerging metabolic disorder. Caused
by the increase in hepatic glucose production and impaired
secretion/action of insulin. Tremendous increase in use of herbs
medicinal for control increased glucose level in both developed and
developing country in last decade. The present study aims to provide a
comprehensive review of anti-diabetic activity of following medicinal
plants like Momordica charantia (bitter melon), Gymnema sylvestre,
Salacia oblonga, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Centratherum
anthelminticum, Pterocarpus marsupium, Terminalia arjuna Linn,
Ocimum sanctum Linn, Tinospora cordifolia, Curcuma longa (Linn), Emblica officinalis
(Amla), Terminalia belerica, Terminalia chebula, Syzygium cumini (Myrtaceae).The
efficiency of these medicinal plants may regulate the diabetic metabolic abnormalities. This
work would help researchers to provide accuracy while choosing potential herbal for diabetic
treatment.
