ROLE OF BILWADI LEHYA ON GASTROINTESTINAL DISORDERS: A CONCEPTUAL REVIEW

Abstract
Normal functioning of digestive system reflects the health of an individual. Healthy diet and life style patterns promotes the digestive capacity and enhances the absorption of nutrients in body. But now a days improper diet, meals timing, lifestyle etc inflict alterations in normality of digestive functions. Mainly manifested as Diarrhoea, vomiting, Abdominal pain, distension etc. In Ayurveda Agni is considered as digestive fire and GI tract is correlated with annavaha srotas, purishavaha srotas etc. So vitiation of Agni and these srotases leads to various gastrointestinal disorders. So ayurvedic treatment focuses on restoring agni and also removing the srotodushti. Bilwadi yoga explained in Leha prakarana of sahasrayoga is one lehya among yogas suitable for acting on Agni mandhya and these sroto dushtis. Similar yoga is explained in bhavaprakasha, chakradatta etc in context of atisara and pravahika chikitsa. Main ingredients are Bilwa moola, Musta, Dhanyaka, Jeerak, Twak, Ela, Nagakesar, Sunti, Pippali, Maricha, Purana guda. Textual indications of this yoga are chardi, arochak, agnisada, praseka swasa, atisara, pravahika etc. This paper focus on the review of the mode of action of ingredients of Bilwadi lehya on curing gastrointestinal related disorders.
