Abstract
Urethral stricture is a rare disease mainly found in male patients. It is a
rational and troublesome problem of the international society. Sushruta
has explained diseases of mutravaha strotas in uttartantra. Mutramarg
sankoch can be correlated with stricture of urethra. Major
complications caused by this disease are urine outflow obstruction,
urine stasis leading to urinary infection, calculi formation, etc. The
suggested treatment of modern science is urethral dilatation, visual
internal cystoscopic urethrotomy or stricturotomy and urethroplasty
which may cause bleeding, false passage, fistula formation, where
surgery has its own complications and limitations. In ayurveda, all
aacharyas, highlighted the use of uttarbasti – a parasurgical procedure
for the diseases of mutravaha strotas. here a case of urethral stricture
treated with uttarbasti is illustrated. A single case study of a male patient 38 yrs old suffering
from a urethral stricture since 8 months. He had complaints of dribbling micturition, painful
micturition, increased frequency of micturition. He had taken allopathic treatment for 2
months, but no significant results were found. After thorough general and physical
examination we decided to give uttarbasti in this condition. (As per reference given in
sushruta samhita) Uttarbasti was done at 3 days interval for 4 weeks. After 2nd sitting patient
got 40% relief. Thus we can conclude that uttarbasti can be considered as a golden choice of
treatment for urethral stricture in ayurveda.
