Abstract

Daruparpatadi ten ingredients herbal formula has been used extensively in Sri Lanka for ailments in respiratory tract. This study evaluated the Total Phenolic Content, in vitro anti-oxidant activity of aqueous and different solvents extracts with increasing polarity such as Hexane, Ethyl Acetate and Ethanol. It has been proven this formula is positive for alkaloids, tannins, phenolic compounds, terpenoids steroids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, saponins, carbohydrates, amino-acids, anthraquinone glycosides, resins in aqueous Hexane, Ethyl Acetate and Ethanol extracts. Highest TPC was found to be in Ethyl Acetate 13.00 ± 0.02mg, compare to standard GAE/g as 18.99 ± 0.44 activity varied as Ethyl Acetate > Ethanol > Hexane > aqueous. The IC50 values based on the DPPH lowest for aqueous extract (18.99 ± 0.44 µg /ml) and highest for ethyl acetate (25.68 ± 0.53 µg/ml)compare to the standard Ascorbic acid (0.1.18 ± 0.98 mc/ml). In vitro FRAP assay method has shown highest activity in Ethanol and lowest was demonstrated in hexane extract compare to the standard Ascorbic acid. Different solvents can be extracted various active chemical compounds in plant materials according to the polarity of the solvent. Present study confirms the validity of using this formula for relieving the symptoms of respiratory tract diseases, further this may be beneficial for identify biologically active compounds extracted to different solvents and can be design new drugs to cure the diseases cause oxidative damage.

Keywords: Antioxidant, respiratory disease symptoms, immuno-modulatory.
