Abstract
Background: Vitiligo also known as Leucoderma is a hypopigmentary
autoimmune disorder which destroy the melanocytes in the skin and
produces white blotches over body. Its prevalence rate between 3 to
4% in India and 1% of world population. In Ayurveda Vitiligo can be
correlated to Shwitra, is harmless but a very serious cosmetic problem
which affect the emotional, psychological and social well- being of
affected person which results in depression which may hamper their
future. Modern and AYUSH systems of medicines mentioned many
medicines and therapies in classics and also many products available in
market for Vitiligo but majority amongst them is not that much
effective may be due to unstandardized procedures or raw materials
used. Many of Ayurvedic medicines advised for Shwitra is to be taken
after “Virechana” Panchkarma procedure which is some times very
difficult to conduct in children’s and many times it is mentioned in classics that it is
contraindicated in Pediatrics age group because of Alpa Bala (Immature immune system) due
to this the proper effects of medicines can’t be seen. So, the efforts made in this regards to make such effective medicine for children’s that may be used very easily and without any
difficult Panchkarma procedure. This may become a new hope in acute and acquired Vitiligo
treatment in children’s. Objective: To analyze the effect of self made Ayurvedic Topical
medication (Dhyas Powder) with Bakuchi oil in Vitiligo. Material and Method: A 14-yearold male patient came to Balroga OPD of Dhanvantari Ayurvedic Medical College &
Hospital, Fatehganj (w) Bareilly, with chief complaints of white patches on lower left leg
since last 8 months but patches are gradually increasing. The patient was treated with
Classics based self made herbal Ayurvedic Topical medication (Dhyas Powder - prepared in
GMP Certified Kushagra Pharmacy Bareilly) and Bakuchi oil with half hour exposure of sun
light in early morning. Results: - White patches healed completely (100%) and no recurrence
of new white patches. Discussion: In Vitiligo, skin loses its pigmentation due to melanin
deficiency but in this Dhyas Powder, main ingredient is “Bakuchi” which has active chemical
composition Psoralens, Psoralidin etc. which on exposure to sun light forms melanin in
depigmented skin. Conclusion: Classics based self made herbal external application of
Dhyas Powder with Bakuchi oil, is safe, time saving and easy in children’s, it has Bakuchi as
main content is very effective on Vitiligo (Shwitra) and Bakuchi proved its synonym
“Shwitraghni.” For long lasting and permanent results further more longitudinal and cohort
studies required on large sample size with combination of this Dhyas Powder and
Shwitraghna as well as Pittaghna internal medicines.
