REVIEW ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF GHRITA PREPARATION USED IN TREATMENT OF BRAIN DISEASES AND DISORDERS

Abstract

The human central nervous system (CNS) is composed of brain and spinal cord, it controls our most unique human function known as consciousness. Brain and mind disorders include a wide range of common neurological and psychiatric illnesses. Brain diseases can outcome directly from intrinsic dysfunction of the brain or complex interactions between the brain and the physical environment. Ayurveda has a deep vision about the treatment of the difficulties of the nervous system. The classical Ayurveda text has described many nervous disorders with due highlighting on their management both prophylactically and healing and for enhancement of intellect and memory. The drugs stimulating Medha (intellect), Smriti (memory) are called "Medhya" drugs. The best medium through which these medicinal drugs can be administered is ghee base. In the given review article some ghrita preparation described such as Ashwagandha ghrita, Ashtang ghrita, Brahmi ghrita, Vachadi ghrita, Saraswata ghrita Kalyanaka Ghrita, Dhatryadi Ghrita. This all ghrita preparation is used in the treatment of various CNS diseases. Contents of Ghrita are effective against several CNS disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinsonism, Epilepsy, ADHD, Cerebral palsy, etc. by their antioxidant, neurotropic, nerve regenerating, regularization of a neurotransmitter, etc. properties and also the drug is in the ghee form hence by its lipidsoluble property it can cross Blood-brain barrier (BBB) thus proving as an effective drug for CNS.
