PHYSIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF AGNI - AN AYURVEDIC REVIEW

Abstract According to Ayurveda, when Dosha, Dhatu, and Mala are in Sama - awastha and Iiulriya, Aatma, Mann all are working properly then the person is considered as Swastha. For Dosha, Dhatu and Mala to be in the state of proportionality Agni should be normal. Agni is in the form of energy and it work through the medium of Pitta. When it is functioning properly it play an important role in digestion. When it becomes abnormal then this Agni is the reason for indigestion. According to the functions and sites of action, Agni has been divided into thirteen types, i.e. Jatharagni, Panchbhutagni and Saptadhatvagni. They work together to maintain the balance in the body as Jhataragni is maintaining metabolism and Bhutagni and Dhatuagni is maintaining the cellular metabolism. Imbalance in the Physiology of Agni is the main cause for the formation of Ama which is the responsible for many diseases. So Agni is essential for every function of body.
