THE RATE OF BIOSYNTHESIS OF ISOLATED ACTIVE PRINCIPLE 4- [(5-CARBOXY-2-HYDROXY)-BENZYL]-1, 10-DIHYDROXY-3, 4, 7, 11, 11- PENTAMETHYLOCTAHYDROCYCLOPENTA<A>NAPHTHALENE FROM AN ANTARCTIC CYANOBACTERIUM NOSTOC CCC 537 UNDER DIFFERENT GROWTH REGIMES

Abstract The known active principle (AP) 4-[(5-carboxy-2-hydroxy)-benzyl]-1,10-dihydroxy-3,4,7,11,11-pentamethyloctahydrocyclopentanaphthalenehas been isolated from an Antarctic cyanobacterium Nostoc CCC537,grows well at 20oC and showed antibacterial properties against bothGram (+) and (-) bacteria as well as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TheKilling efficiency of AP is high when methanol used as a solvent ascompared to water and DMSO. Even the biomass age of 60 day, thetarget cyanobacterium possess maximum antibacterial potential. Toenhance rate of biosynthesis of AP, resuming the nutrient componentsof growth medium such as nitrate and phosphate. Under 29 μM ofphosphate as compared to 116 μM, normal (58 μM), the biomassproduction were reduced while rate of AP biosynthesis raised. Similarly for nitrate, biomasshad increased maximum for 10mM while AP maximum in 5mM concentration. Theproduction rate of AP were analyzed qualitatively by size of inhibition zones (Antibacterialbioassay) and quantitatively by HPLC.
