TREATMENT OF ANXIETY DISORDERS: AN HERBAL APPROACH

. Abstract Anxiety is one of the central nervous system disorders in which human feel excessive and unusual fear, tension, nervousness, dizziness, swatting, palpitation and trembling. It is a universal human experience, it is not a disease. There are multifarious evidences in Indian Traditional System about the usage of herbs and their preparations to treat various neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety and many more. Medicinal plants are considered as a repository of numerous types of bioactive compounds like Withanolides, Saponins, Flavanoids, Alkaloids, Valenol possessing varied therapeutic properties. The vast array of therapeutic effects associated with medicinal plants includes anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antitumor, antimalarial, and analgesic properties. A large number of herbs are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Herbs such as Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Chamomile, Passionflower, and Valerian are used to treat anxiety disorders. Current pharmacological approaches to the management of anxiety are yet to engender desirable results in clinical practice. Natural herbal mixtures act synergistically to provide an effective remedy for anxiety and are considered as nature-based modern drugs.
