INVESTIGATION OF IN VITRO THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITIES OF AQUEOUS AND ETHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF SMILAX CHINA
Apada Reddy Gangadasu*, P. Selvam and Rakesh Jat
. Abstract Phytochemicals are derived secondary metabolites from plants that make to protect themselves against environmental stress and pathogenic microbial invasion. These phytochemicals have been shown to have both positive and pharmacological effects in the treatment of human illnesses. It is well known that the active ingredients found in medicinal plants work together to reduce the primary and secondary difficulties of a variety of ailments. Smilax china (SC) is popularly known as „Jin Gang Teng‟ or „Ba Qia‟, is widely used as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is used for the treatment of diuretic and rheumatic arthritic conditions, for detoxification, to treat lumbago, gout, tumors, and inflammatory diseases. In the present study, the ability of the aqueous extract & Ethanolic extract (SC-A & SC-ET) in scavenging free radicals was assessed by using DPPH assays, in vitro antiinflammatory activity, and ant diabetic activity against alpha-amylase. SC also investigated for antibacterial activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa and Brine shrimp lethality test. Smilax china aqueous extract (SC-A) and ethanolic extracts (SC-ET) tested for in-vitro antioxidant activity, antibacterial activity, anti-diabetic activity, and anti-inflammatory activity. The data presented provide scientific evidence for the antioxidant and other therapeutic efficacy of the SC A & SC ET preparation due to the presence of biologically active molecules present in the herbal preparation.
