FREQUENCY OF FETAL COMPLICATIONS IN DIABETIC PREGNANCIES SENDEMAN PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL, QUETTA

. Abstract Objectives: To measure the frequency of fetal complications in diabetic pregnancies (both pregestational and gestational) whether booked or non-booked. Duration of study and Setting: 16th April 2017 till 17th April 2018, Gynae unit II, Bolan medical complex hospital, Quetta. Subjects and methods: Total number of 50 cases of pregnancy with diabetes were selected from patients admitted to emergency and antenatal ward of gynae unit II. Results: Total numbers of admissions in emergency were 3284. 50 cases of pregnancy with diabetes were studied. Most of the patients were nonbooked, more than 30 years of age and multiparous. Gestational diabetes constituted 82% of cases while pregestational diabetics constituted 18% of cases. 8 women out of 50 had spontaneous miscarriage, 5 underwent preterm delivery, 37 reached term with one intrauterine death. Total number of babies delivered alive were 41, congenital anomalies were found in 5 babies, macrosomia in 20 babies, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) in 10 babies, one intrauterine death (IUD) and 2 neonatal deaths (NND’S) occurred. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach including consultant obstetrician, diabetcian, dietician and neonatologist should work as a team to decrease the frequency of fetal complications in diabetic pregnancies.
