Muhammed Shabeeb N., Abubaker Siddiq*, Bharathi D. R. and Nataraj G. R.
. Abstract India has the very best number of diabetic patients in the world. Anemia is frequently associated with patients with type II diabetes. Anemia is more common in people with diabetes due to a variety of causes. In this context, the study aimed to assess the prevalence and association of anemia in Type II diabetes mellitus patients and also to assess the prescription pattern of Type II diabetes mellitus patients associated with anemia. A prospective observational study was carried out in the General Medicine Department of Basaveshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Chitradurga for 10 months. The subjects for the study included 150 adult patients with having Type II diabetes mellitus, attending the outpatient department and admitted in the ward as an inpatient department. Out of 150 type II diabetes patients, 98 patients were anemic. Female diabetes patients are more prone to anemia compared to male diabetes patients. Out of 98 anemic patients, 63.3% were females and 36.7% were males. The prevalence of anemia in Type II Diabetes mellitus subjects is 65.3%. The Prescription pattern for Type II DM patients is monotherapy (metformin-17.1%) which is mostly preferred than dual & triple therapies to treat the condition. The study results exhibit a higher level of the prevalence of anemia in Type II DM subjects. The findings of our study suggest that anemia is a common finding in poorly controlled diabetic patients. So early diagnosis and correction of anemia among diabetic patients are important. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Anemia, Prevalence, Association. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
