AN EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION ON ANTHELMINTHIC EFFECT OF LEAF OF COMBRETUM INDICUM (L.) – A FOLKLORE CLAIM

. Abstract The medicinal plants are known to possess different medicinal properties and were used from ages in curing different sort of ailments. Among that one is anthelminthic action. Which has attained a great interest as these can give cure from most common disturbing disease which mainly affects child age group. These pathogens causes mortality and morbidities which are uncontrolled due to anthelminthic resistance. The available synthetic drug are leading to more side effects than that of the expected therapeutic efficacy. Hence the need of exploration of medicinal plants in same area is a great point of interest. The folklore people of the Dakshina Kannada, District of Karnataka are using the leaf decoction of the drug Combretum indicum L. which is locally known by the name Eeshwara hoovu for curing helminthiasis. Thus an experimental study carried out on adult Indian earth worms (Lumbricus terrestris L.) to scientifically prove the folklore claim of the drug Combretum indicum L. where Albendazole suspension took as the standard drug. The study proved that the drug Combretum indicum L. is more effective than that of the standard drug experimentally. Keywords: Anthelminthic action. Combretum indicum L., Experimental study.
