Abstract

Topical medication is provided or delivered on the skin surface or mucus membrane in which semi-solid preparation for the topical drug delivery system including creams, foam, lotions, ointment and gels. Generally topical drug delivery system is used in urinary in continence, pain management and contraception and it is the most effective treatment where others system of drug administration does not work. Drug administration is applied for many routes such as topical drug delivery system, vaginal drug delivery system, ocular drug delivery system, nasal drug delivery system etc. Topical gel is a localized drug delivery system, conscious for administration into skin, eye, and rectum and vaginal. Gel is a semi solid, jelly like material which has the properties extend soft and fragile to rigid and tough. In current study topical gel formulations of Clarithromycin were formulated by using different concentration of polymers (single or in combination) like hydroxy propyl cellulose, Xanthan Gum, HPMCK4M and Carbopol. Fifteen formulations were prepared and characterized for the different parameter like color, pH, homogeneity, spreadability, drug content, viscosity and invitro drug release. Drug release study was performed with dialysis Franz diffusion. Formulation through good release distinctiveness was further evaluated for stability study for 15 days. Formulation F11 was good in conditions of drug release and physical characteristics. No significant drug defeat occurred later than 15 days when tested on accelerated storage conditions.

Keywords: Topical gel, Clarithromycin, In vitro drug release, Franz diffusion cell.
