Abstract

Skin is the first organ of the body interacting with the environmental agents like Physical, Chemical and Biological agents. Vicharchika is a type of Kshudra kustha with Kapha and Pitta Pradhana dosha with Kandu, Pidaka and Shyavata etc symptoms and it can be correlated with Eczema. Eczema is a common problem all over the world and survey explored the incidence of one in ten among the general population. The drug Paribhadra (Erythrina variegata L.) is commonly available in tropical and sub tropical regions of India. It is categorized into the family Fabaceae. The stem bark of the plant is being used by the folklore practitioners both internally as well as externally for the treatment of Vicharchika in and around rural area of Moodbidri. The pharmacognostical and phytochemical study of the drug reveals the important components of the drug. Hence, present study was undertaken to evaluate pharmacognostical and phytochemical study of the drug Paribhadra (E. variegata). In pharmacognostical study the macroscopic and microscopic studies were done. Ash analysis and preliminary phytochemical study also was done. In phytochemical study HPTLC and TLC was carried out. Preliminary phytochemical study of the drug Paribhadra showed the presence of Carbohydrates, Proteins, Alkaloids, Flavanoids, Tannins, Triterpenoids, Resins, Saponins, Phenolics. Ash analysis of stem bark of Paribhadra showed the presence of Fluorides, Sulphate, Phosphate, Sodium among the inorganic constituents. In HPTLC documentation Paribhadra stem bark extract showed 10 peaks at 254nm, 9 peaks at 366nm.

Keywords: Paribhadra, Erythrina variegata Linn., Pharmacognostical study, Phytochemical study.
