FLOUROQUINOLONES PRESCRIBING IN PRIVATE AND GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS IN KARACHI, PAKISTAN

. Abstract Objective: The objective of the study is to explore flouroquinolones antibiotic prescribing in government and private hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted for the period of 08 months from May 2018-Jenaury 2019, in Public and Private Sector Tertiary Care setups of Karachi. Data was collected from medical and Urology ward, to evaluate the prescriptions of flouroquinolones based on Culture sensitivity tests (CST), empirical, targeted, therapies Results: Out of total 450 patients 42.22% patients were from Public and 57.77% were from Private Sector Tertiary Care Hospital. 18% of the patients from Public and 11% from Private Sector Tertiary Hospitals were prescribed Quinolones after performing their Culture Sensitivity Test. However, 86% of the patients were prescribed Quinolones without Culture Sensitivity Test. 68% patients were prescribed with empirical therapy, 18% with De- Escalation therapy, while 14% were prescribed with definitive therapy of quinolones. Conclusions: Study concluded that some serious efforts are required to avoid the irrational prescribing practice and promote the rational prescribing practice of antibiotics particularly for Flouroquinolones.
