Abstract

Upper Respiratory Tract Infection is often word health problem that can be caused by Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. The treatment can use antibiotics or medicinal plants as alternative medicine. Bandotan plant (Ageratum conyzoides L.) is a plant that has antioxidant and antibacterial activity in the presence of phenol and flavonoid compounds. The purpose of this study is to determine the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of bandotan extract with various solvents. Antioxidant testing was carried out using the DPPH method, the determination of total phenol and flavonoid levels was continued, while the antibacterial activity test using the microdilution method to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), continue by determination of the Minimum Kill Concentration (MKC). The results of antioxidant activity showed bandotan extract of various solvents (ethanol 70%, ethyl acetate and chloroform) antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 126.4871 g/mL, 90.2554 g/mL and 93.2538 g/mL, while the levels of total phenol and total flavonoid obtained were 28.85 ± 1.48% and 0.65 ± 0.03 %, 35.06 ± 1.14% and 9.67 ± 0.30%, 25.85 ± 0.29, respectively. % and 9.68 ± 0.38%. Meanwhile, the results of antibacterial activity showed bandotan extract with various solvents (70% ethanol, ethyl acetate, and chloroform) antibacterial activity with MIC of 256 ppm and MKC of 512 ppm.

Keywords: Bandotan; antioxidant, antibacterial; Streptococcus pyogenes.
