ANTIDEPRESSANT LIKE EFFECTS OF HYDRO ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF CHENOPODIUM ALBUM ON CUMS INDUCED DEPRESSION IN MICE
*Shailendra Kumar Yadav
. Abstract This study is aimed to determine the antidepressant like effects of Chenopodium Album Linn on Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress (CUMS) induced depression. The plant was collected from nearby area of Lucknow and would be authenticated. The plant material was collected, cleaned, washed, dried, powdered and sieved. The sieved material extracted by appropriate solvents and screened for the phytochemical constituents. Swiss Albino mice of either sex, weighing 20-25 g, were used for the study. They were maintained under standard laboratory conditions at ambient temperature of 25±2ºC and 50±15% relative humidity (RH) with a natural light dark cycle. Animals were fed with a standard pellet diet and water ad libitum. Evaluation of antidepressant activity of extract was performed by following method; Sucrose Preference test, Forced swim test, Tail Suspension Test. Behavioral parameters was observed by locomotor test. CUMS prolonged the immobility time in the FST and TST compared with that in positive control group without CUMS induction. The administration of Hydro Ethanolic Extract of Chenopodium album (HEECA) at a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg reduced the immobility time in a dose dependent manner. The HEECA at the dose of 400mg/kg showed the significant decrease in immobility time when compared with negative control group. The standard drug imipramine showed significant decrease in immobility time in comparison to negative control group. Keywords: Anthelmintic, Anti-depressants, Aphrodisiac, Corticosterone, Depression, Diuretic, Glutathione, Imipramine, Immobility, Laxative and Phytochemical.
