Abstract

CLINICAL EVALUATION OF THE ROLE OF PIPPALYADI ANJANAM AND TRAIPHALAM GHRITAM IN THE MANAGEMENT OF ARMA W.S.R PTERYGIUM

Abstract

Introduction:- Arma is a disease of Shuklamandal of eyes in which a wing like growth gradually develops from either Kaneenika Sandhi (Inner Canthus) or Apang Sandhi (outer Canthus) towards the cornea. Arma can be correlated to pterygium. Pterygium is more commonly found in people residing in tropical and subtropical area. Risk factor includes outdoor work, exposure to U.V.radiation, dry and dusty climate, genetic predisposition etc. Acharya sushruta and Vaghbhatta described Arma as a Chhedan sadhya vyadhi. However in the initial stages of the disease lekhana Anjana application is advisable to cure the disease. Method:- The present study is open labelled randomized clinical trial. In this study patients aged between 20 to 60 years suffering from Arma (pterigium) were selected and randomly divided in 3 groups having 15 patients in each group. Group 1 was administered with Pippalyadi anjana twice a day, Group 2 was administered pippalyaadi anjana along with Traiphalam ghritam orally after food and in Group 3 was administered with Traiphala ghrita only. Total duration of trial was 2 months. Results:- In Group 1 overall average improvement observed was 65 % in symptoms like Vedanaa, Prakash ashaasahyata, shopha, daha etc. In Group 2 overall average improvement observed was 70 %. In Group 3 average improvement observed was 68.50%. Conclusion:- Pippalyadi Anjana and Traiphalam ghritam were found to be effective in reducing the signs and symptoms of the Arma (pterygium). The results were also found statisticallly significant.
