UNDERSTANDING THE CLINICAL PRESENTATION OF HYPOTHYROIDISM BY COMPARING ZULEWSKI’S CLINICAL SCORE PATTERN WITH CLASSICAL SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF KAPHA VATA VRUDDHA PITTAKSHAYAJA SANNIPATA: A REVIEW

. Abstract Hypothyroidism is a clinical syndrome resulting from deficiency of thyroid hormones which results in generalized slowing down of almost all functions of human body. Thyroid is the most commonly encountered problem in our day to day practice. Hypothyroidism is proposing major clinical challenge for clinicians both in developing as well as developed world. Zulewski’s clinical score is considered to reevaluate the classical signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism. There is need to understand diagnosis, prognosis and safe and effective management of hypothyroidism according to principles of Ayurveda. An effort has been made to understand the disease from Ayurvedic perspective. Hypothyroidism is considered as kapha vataj pandu, kaphavataj shotha, kaphavrutta vata, bahudoshavastha and kapha vata vruddha pittakshaya sannipata by various Ayurveda experts. After studying clinical presentation of hypothyroidism from various sources and texts, it is found that this condition is almost similar to one of the sannipata awastha explained in charaka sutrasthana as kapha vatavruddha pittakshayaj sannipata. In the present article, it is tried to understand that whether Zulewski”s scoring pattern can be adopted for the kapha vata vruddha pittakshaya sannipata condition or some of the presentations found in sannipataja condition should be included in zulewski’s scoring pattern.
