Abstract

This study evaluated the in vitro antioxidant activity of Telfairia occidentalis pod. The parameters assessed were 2, 2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazine (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging activity, total peroxyl radical-trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitric oxide, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) scavenging activity, using vitamin C as control. Methanol was used for extraction, and five concentrations of the extract; 12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 200mg/ml were used for the analysis. It was observed that the Telfairia occidentalis pod sample showed DPPH, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, ORAC, SOD scavenging, nitric oxide scavenging, FRAP and TRAP activities.
