IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF TELFAIRIA OCCIDENTALIS (FLUTED PUMPKIN) POD

. Abstract This study evaluated the in vitro antioxidant activity of Telfairia occidentalis pod. The parameters assessed were 2, 2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazine (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging activity, total peroxyl radical-trapping antioxidant parameter (TRAP), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitric oxide, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) scavenging activity, using vitamin C as control. Methanol was used for extraction, and five concentrations of the extract; 12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 200mg/ml were used for the analysis. It was observed that the Telfairia occidentalis pod sample showed DPPH, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, ORAC, SOD scavenging, nitric oxide scavenging, FRAP and TRAP activities. For TRAP activity, the sample showed values which increased with increase in concentration which were significantly different (p100>50>25>12.5mg/ml.
