APASMARA – DIAGNOSIS THROUGH NIDANA PANCHAKA

. Abstract Apasmara is one among the Shareeramanasika Vikara presenting with loss of memory and involuntary movements as important presenting feature. In this disease, Dushti of both Shareera and Manas happens. The hallmark features of Apasmara are Tamapravesha (entering into darkness), Beebhatsa cheshta (abnormal postures of the body) and Smritinasha (loss of memory) and Dhee Satva Samplava (derangement of intellect and mind). Apasmara simulates the explanation of epilepsy in modern science. Epilepsy is the tendency to have recurrent seizures. It should be regarded as a symptom of brain disease rather than a disease itself. According to WHO, around 50 million people worldwide is suffering from epilepsy. Proper diagnosis forms the base for the treatment. It is estimated that up to 70% of people living with epilepsy could live seizure-free if properly diagnosed and treated. So, there is a need to understand the disease. Here an attempt is made to study the various methods of diagnosis of Apasmara with reference to epilepsy.
