PHARMACOGNOSTIC STUDIES OF COLOCASIA ESCULENTA LINN.

. Abstract Colocasia esculenta Linn. belongs to family Araceae. The plant is economically important. Colocasia esculenta is a tall herb and Leaves contain calcium oxalate, fibers, minerals (calcium phosphorus, etc.), and starch, vitamin A, B, C, etc. Phytochemically, these also contain flavones, apigenin, luteolin, and anthocyanins. The pressed juice of the petiole is stypic, and may be used to arrest arterial hemorrhage. It is sometimes used in earache and otorrhoea, and also as stimulant and rubefacient and also in internal hemorrhages. Leaf juice is stimulant, expectorant, astringent, appetizer, and otalgia. In the present study, leaf of the plant Colocasia esculenta has been evaluated for phytochemicals and also the ash values. The Phytochemical analysis of the crude extracts indicated the presence of major phytocompounds, including proteins and amino acid.
