ROLE OF TIKTHA KSHIR BASTI KARMA IN ORTHOPAEDIC REHABILITATION IN GERIATRIC DISORDERS

Abstract

Panchakarma is one of the arms of Ayurveda which plays an important role in rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders in geriatric age group. Orthopaedic rehabilitation is the approach to alleviate pain and limitations of the musculoskeletal system. Geriatric age group is most prone to the degenerative conditions involving specifically the musculoskeletal system. Basti chikitsa is considered to be the half the treatment for Vata dominated diseases. Basti is considered as Param Aushadh for Vata. Vata Dosha is predominantly present in Asthi Dhatu and Sandhi (joints). In the present context Tikta Kshir is used as Basti dravya and it contains Guduchi (Tinospora cardiofolia). Nimba (Azadirakta indica) Vasa (Adhathoda vasica), Kantakari (Solanum Surrattense), Patola (Trichosanthes dioica), Kshira (Milk) Goghrita (Ghee), Madhu (Honey), Saindhava (Salt) which is effective in Asthigata Rog that is Orthopaedic Rehabilitation in Geriatric Disorders. Tikta Rasa has tendency to go towards Asthi dhatu after assimilation in the body due to dominance of Akasha and Vayu Mahabhuta. In Kshir and Ghrut has Snigdha and Madhura properties hence it does Vata Shamana in the body. Considering all these factors it was decided to evaluate the efficacy of Tikta- Kshir Basti in Orthopaedic Rehabilitation in Geriatric Disorders.
