REVIEW ON NIOSOMES AS NOVEL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM
Akshay Katkale*, Sneha Sonawane, Vishvam Kunde and Siddhant Hagavane
. Abstract Niosomes are a novel drug delivery system that traps hydrophilic drugs in non-polar regions within the bilayer, so both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs can be incorporated into niosomes. Niosomes or nonionic surfactants are microscopic lamellar structures formed by mixing an alkyl or dialkyl polyglycerol ether-based nonionic surfactant with cholesterol and then hydration in an aqueous medium. Niosomes are self-assembled vesicles composed primarily of synthetic surfactants and cholesterol. Niosomes are vesicles composed of nonionic surfactants, biodegradable, relatively non-toxic, more stable, less expensive, and an alternative to liposomes. Manufacturing is the same that it is, hydrated with an aqueous phase of the lipid phase, which can be a pure surfactant or a mixture of surfactant and cholesterol. After preparation of the niosome dispersion, the unentrapped drug is separated by dialysis centrifugation or gel filtration. This article explored the manufacturing methods, properties, and uses of niosomes. Niosomes have the ability to reduce the side effects of drugs and increase the therapeutic efficacy of various drugs. Niosomes are a novel approach to liposomes. Their structure is similar to liposomes, so they may represent an alternative vesicle system with respect to liposomes. Niosomes are used as carriers for the delivery of various types of drugs, such as synthetic and plant drugs, antigens, hormones, and other bioactive compounds. This narrative review describes basic aspects of the niosome, including its structural components, methods of preparation and current applications in various diseases. Keywords: Niosomes, Novel drug delivery system, Lamellar, Bilayer, Non-ionic surfactant, Drug entrapment. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
