Abstract

Metabolic diseases are those diseases or disorders that disrupt normal metabolism i.e. the process of converting food to energy on a cellular level. Obesity, diabetes, Hypertension and dyslipidemia are some of the most common diseases. The prevalence of such diseases is increasing day by day due to disturbed lifestyle and dietary habits. In Ayurveda, Atisthul i.e obese is mentioned in Nindit Purush by Charaka in Sutrasthana. Obesity is referred as “Medoroga” as meda and mamsa dhatu are vitiated in pathogenesis of obesity. Excess accumulation of meda further leads to other complications such as CAD, NAFLD etc. Another severe metabolic disorder is Madhumeha i.e. Diabetes Mellitus. According to Ayurveda it can be understood under the umbrella of Medovahastrotodushti. Initial conditions can be compared with Medovaha Strotodushti lakshanas and complications can be compared to Upadravas. Ayurveda guides the management of Metabolic disorders by Pathya, Shodhana karma, Yoga, Shadaupakrama as mentioned by Charaka, use of ayurvedic formulations and herbs.
