Abstract

Pharmaceutical invention and research are increasingly concentrating on delivery systems which enhance desirable therapeutic objectives while minimizing side effects and sustained release dosage form are one of them. Recently, sustained release products became a very useful tool in medicinal practice, offering a wide range of actual and perceived advantages to the patient compliance. Now a days as very few drugs are coming out of R&D and already existing drugs are suffering the problem of resistance due to their irrational use specifically in case of medicines like antibiotics. Sustained Release is suitable for overcome the side effect of medicament and also increase therapeutic efficacy of drug. Hence, change in the operation is a suitable and optimized way to make the some drug more effective by slight change in the drug delivery. The basic idea behind sustained drug delivery system is to optimize the various parameters like biopharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics properties of a drug in such a way that therapeutic efficacy i s maximized, side- effects are reduced and cure of the disease is achieved easily. This article contains the essential information regarding sustained release dosage and its advantage; also describe the various criteria for selection of drug for the drug delivery system.
