IMPORTANCE OF NIDRA IN MAINTENANCE OF HEALTH

. Abstract Introduction: Ayurveda explains the main three pillars of life amongst that Nidra is said to be the very important tripod of life. Nidra (sleep) being an integral part of our life plays an important role in promotion of health and prevention of disease. Sleep is important because it affects our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. The reported prevalence of insomnia is 9% in general population and about 30% suffer from occasional insomnia. Material and Methods: Various Ayurveda classics and studies published in journals related to Ayurveda Nidra are reviewed and analyzed. Result: Analysis of classical references and various experimental studies shows that Nidra increased secretion of growth hormone, progressive enhancement of thought process; Indriya and Karmendriya are under rest giving rise to mental and physical satisfaction. Conclusion: Sleep is very much essential for maintenance of good health. It promotes growth hormone, mental relaxation and restoring energy.
