Abstract

A COMPARATIVE CLINICAL TRIAL ON THE EFFECT OF DHUPANA KARMA AND SITZ BATH IN THE MANAGEMENT OF BAHYA ARSHA WITH RESPECT TO EXTERNAL HAEMORRHOIDS

Abstract

Arsha which occurs in guda is a disease of Gudagata vikara. This disease is generally compared to hemorrhoids explained in other system of medicine. In Ayurveda Hemorrhoids can be equated as Arsha, which is one of the Ashtamahagada. Arshas is deerghakalanubandhi, dushchikitsya, Tridoshaja and it is Marma stanagata vikara. During the process of pathogenesis vitiated Apanadi doshas gets localized in Mamsa, Meda & Twak of Guda Pradesh resulting in appearance of abnormal fleshy out growth in Guda. Present time is the era of changing food, sedentary lifestyle and mental stress, all these factors disturbs the digestive system resulting into many diseases. Among them Arshas are quite common in the society. Management of Arsha through surgical procedure has become notorious due to post-operative pain associated with it. And surgery is not possible in cases like extremes of age, surgically unfit persons, pregnancy etc. hence this study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of Dhupan karma with indigenous drugs (sindhukadi dhupa) and sitz bath in the management of Bahya arshas. Methods: The present study, 40 diagnosed patients of Bahya Arshas were selected and divided into two equal groups. In group A, patients were treated with Sindhukadi Dhupan Karma and group B patients were treated with povidine iodine and salt sitz bath for 10 days and assessment was made on 0th day before treatment, 3rd, 6th & 10th day during treatment and 25th, and 30th day as follow up. Patients were assessed on the basis of subjective and objective parameters before treatment, during and at the end of the treatment. Results: The treatment with Sindhukadi aDhupan karma have shown effective results during and post follow up of treatment in reducing signs and symptoms. After the total course of intervention the data obtained towards the results indicated that Dhupana karma was effective than povidine iodine and salt sitz bath therapy in the management of Arshas.
