Abstract

Elaeocarpus ganitrus Gaertn. K. Schum is an Evergreen large tree of Rudraksha. The word Rudraksha is consequent from two words – Rudra (रुद्र) and Aksha (अक्ष). Rudraksha tree was formed by the tear of Lord Shiva and signifies from ancient times. Rudraksha is a big leaved tree belonging to the family Elaeocarpaceae found in the Himalayan region and gangetic plains. According to Ayurveda, Rudraksha cures many health problems like anorexia, anxiety, diabetes, neurological, skin related disorders. Elaeocarpus ganitrus have many pharmacological effects like Anti-epileptic, anti-diabetic, antiinflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-convulsive, anti-hypertensive etc. The chemical constituents of Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb. contains quercetin, gallic and elagicacids, elaeocarpine, iso-elaeocarpine and Rudrakine. This article is an attempt to review about the power of Rudraksh, its spiritual and medicinal uses.
