A LITERARY REVIEW ON LANGHANA THERAPY

. Abstract Ayurveda is the ancient science of life and it has the holistic concept of health. In today‟s era due to changes in lifestyle, behavior and food habits, the rate of lifestyle disorders is increased. The wrong lifestyle and food habitats causes the impairment of jatharagni which leads to formation of aama which accumulates into body channels and causes diseases. Acharyas have explained, langhana is the first line treatment or aama. Acharya Charaka has stated the basic principles of treatment under the heading of Shat-upakramas which also includes langhana therapy which is divided into ten types. The purpose of this therapy is to make body light by removing the heaviness with the help of pachana of doshas. Fasting is the voluntary abstinence from diet for particular period of time which can be therapeutic and non-therapeutic. According to modern science Autophagy, the process which utilizes and recycles unnecessary components accumulates in the cells by removing defective proteins and organelles from cells and maintain it in good state can be correlate with the langhana therapy. This article contains systematic compilation of langhana therapy according Ayurveda and modern science for easier application during the treatment.
