Abstract

JALOUKAVACHARANA-RECENT SCOPES AND ADVANCEMENTS OF HIRUDOTHERAPY

Abstract

Although the science of medicine and surgery has advanced by many leaps and bounces today, many techniques practiced today have still has its roots derived from the practices of our ancient Acharyas. Jaloukavacharana that was practiced by Acharya Sushrutha has recently underwent many researches and has revealed promising results on various disorders as inflammatory Osteoarthritis and after many surgical procedures like reconstructive surgeries.There are more than 600 species of leech varieties identified among which Hirudo medicinalis is used for treatment purpose. Apart from Hirudin leech contains more than 20 bioactive molecules in their secretions which are having analgesic, anti inflammatory, platelet inhibitory anticoagulant and thrombin regulatory functions. Acharya Sushrutha has indicated Jaloukavacharana for Granthi as well as Arbuda. Recent studies showed that salivary glands of leech contains bioactive principles that has anti metastatic activity. Now medicinal leeches have been US Food and Drug administration approved treatment for venous congestion in graft tissue to promote healing which is being used widely in many countries all over the world. A novel antithrombotic and anticoagulant pharmaceutical preparation has been released with the trade name “piyavit’’, which consisted leech salivary extract with promising results in CVD. Studies proved Leeches shown analgesic effect in osteoarthritis of knee and reduced stiffness too. Still more and more studies are going on over this annelid. Let this tiny bit of work brings light to extend the scopes and possibilities of Jaloukavacharana in Ayurveda and also a tribute to the great Acharya Sushrutha.
