RECENT ADVANCES ON SENNA AS A LAXATIVE: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

. Abstract Senna is the common name for the ayurvedic herb Cassia angustifolia. In Sanskrit, it is also referred to as swarnapatri. It is a nonprescription laxative that has FDA approval. Its laxative effects are used to cleanse the bowels prior to diagnostic procedures like colonoscopies. Although Senna is an Arabic name, Sudan is its original home. It is a little herb that can reach heights of two to three feet. It is grown in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka in India. Recently, commercial cultivation of it has begun in Jodhpur and Kutch (Gujarat) (Rajasthan). Tschirch and Hiepe conducted the first thorough investigation of the leaves.
