CLINICAL TRIAL OF ARJUNA BARK (TERMINALIA ARJUNA ROXB.) LEPA IN VYANGA W.S.R. TO MELASMA

. Abstract ‘Beauty’ is the thing which has been searched and appreciated now and then since time immortal. Healthy glowing skin with even complexion acts as a beauty enhancer. In Ayurveda, a wide range of skin disorders are described under the name of ‘Kushta’ and ‘Ksudrarogas’. Vyanga is one of the kshudrarogas which is described as ‘tanu’, ‘niruja’ and ‘kshava’ mandalotpatti at face which is dark patchy discoloration of facial skin. Vyanga is pathological condition of facial skin due to etiopathogenesis of vitiation of vata and pitta doshas. Many herbs are a rich source of bioactive chemicals, free from harmful side-effects, potentially safe and effective skin lightening agents. Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna Roxb.) is one of such drugs which has been mentioned by the Acharyas in the treatment of Vyanga in form of external application as lepa. Although Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna Roxb.) has been more known for its cardioprotective and hypolipidemic activity. Besides this the bark powder has been found to possess fungicidal, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, immune-modulatory, anti-oxidant activity.
