MODERN ADVANCES IN HERBAL DRUG STANDARDISATION – AN OVERVIEW
Dr. Lalita Dahiya*, Dr. Rajesh Sharma and Dr. Sakshi Sharma
. Abstract Herbal drug standardization is a critical process that involves the characterization, identification, and evaluation of the quality and purity of herbal products. This is necessary to ensure that herbal medicines are safe, effective, and consistent in their composition and therapeutic effects. The standardization process helps to reduce variability in the production of herbal drugs and ensure the reliability and reproducibility of their therapeutic effects. Herbal drug standardization involves the identification and quantification of active ingredients, as well as the evaluation of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of herbal medicines. This includes the analysis of the composition of herbal drugs, the determination of their pharmacological and toxicological properties, and the assessment of their stability and shelf life. Several methods and techniques are used in the standardization of herbal drugs, including chromatography, spectrophotometry, and microscopy. The use of these techniques helps to establish the quality control standards and criteria that are necessary to ensure the consistent production of herbal medicines. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the standardization of herbal medicines due to the increasing popularity of these products and their widespread use in traditional and complementary medicine. However, there is still a need for further research and development in this field, particularly in terms of the establishment of standardization methods and protocols for different types of herbal medicines.
