A CONCEPTUAL STUDY OF APANG AND AVARTA MARMA

. Abstract Ayurveda is a holistic science of life and Sharir is basic stream of Ayurveda classics. The concept of Marma is one of the unique principles mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic texts by our Acharyas. Marma are not only anatomical landmark but they are also the sites where Tridosh are present with their subtle forms. Marma Chikitsa comes under the Angirasi, the type among the four Vedic Chikitsa. Now a days the principles of Marma plays an important role in clinical field in modern era. All the Acharyas have mentioned 107 such vital areas in the body. These are the vital areas where the energy resides as Prana and are the source of energy so they should be protected very well during any surgical intervention or procedure. Acharya Sushruta has stated Marma as Shalyavishayaardaha. Apang and Avarta Marma, are two among the Vaikalyakar Marma, present in the head region (Urdhwajatrugata). If these two get injured causes diminished vision or partial loss of vision (Dristimandhya) and blindness (Andhya). But if treated carefully can cure diseases like xerosis and myopia. This paper aims to provide conceptual and clinical importance of Apang and Avarta Marma collected from different Ayurvedic text relevant to today’s era.
