MARMA THERAPY AS NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL INTERVENTION IN PAIN MANAGEMENT

Abstract
Pain is an extraordinary sense that could range from slight to intense
ache. Ache has both physical and emotional components. The physical
fragment of pain effects from nerve stimulation. In Ayurveda pain is
associated with Vedana. Pain is the most common problem in today’s
busy and exhausting life, and it is one of the serious problems present
throughout the globe as its prevalence is high. Ayurveda pain
management embraces pharmacological and nonpharmacological
approaches such as Marma Chikitsa, and meditation which help in
liberating the pain effects without any adverse effects on the body.
Marma points are stimulated by different methods, so by
stimulations, Marma may be directed to remove blockages and
arouse Prana or energy flow thus resulting in a state of healthy body and mind. Marma
Chikitsa becomes a powerful means in influncing the healing of almost every known ill
condition like pain. Marma technique is non-invasive modality of conduct in which
calculated amount of pressure is applied to vital points called Marma in order to relieve pain.
Acharya Sushruta has specified thorough description of Marma in Pratyek
Marmanirdeshsharir. In this review, the efficacy of Marma therapy as a nonpharmacological
intervention in pain management will be analysed.
