Pradeepkumar Tiwari* and Samadhan Madhukar Patil

Abstract

The term prana corresponds to the respiratory air or Prana Vayu. The channel of the flow of Prana vayu is called the Pranavaha Srothas. Even though the „Moolsthana‟ (roots of origin) of Pranvaha Strotasa are Hridaya and Mahakoshtha, it‟s „Vyaktisthan‟ that is functional site is a lung since all symptoms of Pranavaha strotodushti are related to rhythm, rate, and depth of respiration. Hence Respiratory system can be compared to Pranavaha srotas in Ayurveda. The word Prana has got wide range of understanding. Prana is the vital force of the body that imparts life. So, to assess Pranvaha Strotasa in an objective view, we have to assess lung functions at first. For this purpose, Spirometry can be used. Spirometry means the measuring of breath. It measures the air flow entering and leaving the lungs and hence the lung capacities and volumes. Lung capacities and volumes are the basic pillars for the rate, rhythm, and depth of Respiration. Cigarette smoking has extensive effects on respiratory function Hence measuring of these values in smokers of different dehaprakriti will help us to assess Pranavaha strotasa objectively.

Keywords: Pranavaha srotas, Prakriti, Spirometry.
