A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF CLERODENDRUM PHLOMIDIS

. Abstract The World Health Organisation (WHO) claimed that 80% of the populace in underdeveloped nations relies on traditional medicines, primarily plant-based pharmaceuticals, for their basic medical requirements. Clerodendrum phlomidis Linn. f. (Family- Lamiaceae) is a large shrub about 2-3 m high with profuse branching, sometimes attaining a height of 6 m to become a small tree. Branches and twig hairy, lighter in weight when dried. Leaves simple, opposite, petiolate, flowering throughout the year and fruiting September to March in particular. Clerodendrum, with about 580 species, belongs to the family Verbenaceae and is widely distributed in the tropical and warm temperate regions of the world. The leaves of some species of Clerodendrum form an important source of diet in North eastern part of India. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the various aspects of Clerodendrum species with respect to their traditional usage, phytochemical, pharmacological or use as alternative medicine for the treatment of various diseases.
