*Dr. Ghitashree Gogoi, Dr. Bishnu Prasad Sharma, Dr. Ranjan Kalita and Dr. Maniruddin Dewan
. Abstract Hypothyroidism is a common disorder of the thyroid gland characterised by clinical features like fatigue, constipation, weight gain, puffiness of face, dry skin, body ache etc. Thyroid gland regulates nearly all bodily functions including metabolic, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, nervous and reproductive system either directly or indirectly. The functions of thyroid gland have similarity with the functions of Agni in Ayurveda. All the metabolic processes of our body are under the control of Agni (Jatharagni, Bhutagni, Dhatwagni). Jatharagnimandya effects the Bhutagni and Dhatwagni too as they are dependent on the former. Although Direct correlation of Hypothyroidism may not be seen in Ayurveda, on the basis of symptomatology, it can be correlated with Dhatwagnimandya (especially Ras and Meda dhatu) resulting from Jatharagnimandyata due to various causative factors. Kanchanar guggulu, Ajamodadi churna, Amlaki churna, Punarnavasava helps in correcting the hypo functioning Agni and restores normalcy in the thyroid gland.
