Abstract

NATURAL-BASED HYDROGELS IN COSMETICS: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Chanchal Jawarkar* and Dr. Sangeeta H. Sahasrabuddhe

.

Abstract

The skin, serving as our body's largest organ, plays a fundamental role in safeguarding our system. The intricate stratum corneum poses a challenge for skincare treatments due to its robust barrier function. Maintaining optimal skin hydration is pivotal for skin health and flexibility. The burgeoning demand for natural alternatives in the cosmetics industry has sparked a surge in innovative skincare products. Among these, hydrogel masks stand out for their efficacy in enhancing hydration, promoting skin radiance, and mitigating signs of aging. This comprehensive review delves into the classification of natural-based hydrogels used in cosmetics. These hydrogels, sourced from proteins (collagen, gelatin, keratin, silk fibroin, eggshell membrane), polysaccharides (alginate, cellulose, chitosan, hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycan), and decellularized matrices (extracellular matrix bacterial cells and plant-based materials), exhibit diverse properties beneficial for skincare formulations. Protein-based hydrogels offer compatibility with biological processes, making them suitable for various cosmetic applications. Meanwhile, polysaccharide-derived hydrogels are preferred for their exceptional moisture retention capabilities and biodegradability, making them suitable for hydrationfocused skincare formulations. Decellularized matrices present promising options for advanced skin rejuvenation and repair. This categorization emphasizes the versatility of natural-based hydrogels in addressing diverse skincare concerns and their significance in crafting innovative cosmetic products. Understanding the properties and potential of these natural sources provides insights into their optimal utilization in developing effective and safe cosmetic formulations for skincare.
