THE CONCEPT OF PSYCHODERMATOLOGY IN AYURVEDA

Abstract

Ayurveda describes variety of skin diseases under the umbrella of „kustha’ and „kshudra roga’. Psychological disturbance have their vital role in the manifestation and precipitation of the condition. In case of contemporary medical sciences, the relation between mind and skin is described under the heading Psychodermatology. Psychodermatology or Psychocutaneous disorders are conditions resulting from the interaction between the mind and the skin. It can be either primary psychiatric or primary cutaneous, with various degrees of associations between psyche and skin. Approximately 30-40% patients seeking treatment for skin disorders have an underlying psychiatric or a psychological problem that either causes or exacerbates a skin complaint.[1] Ayurveda fundamentals have established a close association with psyche and skin. Skin is negatively impacted by chinta (worry), shoka (grief) etc. and in turn directly or indirectly plays a major role in the manifestation and aggravation of skin diseases. Ayurveda has its own unique principles of diagnosis and treatment of various skin diseases and is concerned for prevention and maintaining a healthy balance of mind and body. Therefore, more than a cosmetic nuisance the skin disorders lead to different psychological ailments which impair the quality of life in the patients. Thus, the Ayurveda concept of psychodermatology should be revalidated and its role in pathogenesis and treatment modality in various skin diseases should be established.
