ROLE OF SHIRODHARA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF ATTENTION DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD) IN CHILDREN
Dr. Zenia Dharani* and Dr. Minakshi
. Abstract Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity that interfere with daily functioning or development. Its etiology is linked with hereditary and genetic factors triggered by environmental influences. It typically begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood, the most common population affected being school age children. ADHD is found to be more common in boys than in girls. Its treatment often involves a combination of behavioral therapy, education and medication. According to Ayurveda each and every disease arises due to vitiation of either Sharirika or Manasika Doshas or both. The classical features of ADHD imply vitiation of Vata Dosha in Sharirika Bhava and Raja Dosha in Manasika Bhava. In Ayurveda there is no direct reference for ADHD but based on some references about abnormal behaviour it can be considered under Unmada Vyadhi i.e. Manasika Vikara. There are references in the Charaka Samhita that cite symptoms associated with inattention, hyperactivity and compulsive behaviour as the symptoms of Vata imbalance in the body. Shirodhara is a unique modality of treatment for mental disorder as per Ayurvedic literatures. Behavioral disorder like ADHD has close similarity with Manasika Vyadhi and Shirodhara can be adopted as one of the best treatments for neurobehavioral disorder.
