MADHUMEHA IN AYURVEDIC AND MODERN MEDICINE: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS
*Dr. Laxman Harishchandra Shingte and Dr. G. Vinay Mohan
. Abstract Madhumeha, an Ayurvedic condition, correlates closely with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in modern medicine. T2DM, a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, arises from an imbalance in insulin secretion or action. Ayurveda describes Madhumeha as a form of Prameha, primarily caused by the vitiation of Vata-Kapha Dosha, with Meda (fat) and other Dhatus (tissues) as Dushyas, affecting the urinary system. Both Ayurvedic and modern systems recognize the impact of an unhealthy lifestyle in the development of this disease, including factors like poor diet, sedentary behavior, and genetic predisposition. This review compares the Ayurvedic understanding of Madhumeha and the modern pathophysiology of T2DM, focusing on the etiology (Hetu), symptoms (Purva Roopa and Roopa), pathogenesis (Samprapti), and management options. While modern medicine primarily utilizes hypoglycemic agents like Metformin, Ayurveda offers holistic treatment including dietary modifications, herbal formulations (e.g., Guduchi, Jambu, Shilajit), and lifestyle interventions (Dinacharya, Ritucharya). Both systems present unique advantages and drawbacks in terms of efficacy, side effects, and longterm outcomes. This comparative analysis highlights the integrative potential of Ayurvedic and modern approaches in managing Madhumeha (T2DM), suggesting that a combined approach could optimize patient outcomes.
