Abstract

Over the past ten years, there has been a steady increase in the demand for mouth dissolving tablets (MDTs), and the pharmaceutical industry has seen a rapid expansion in this field. Oral drug delivery continues to be the recommended method for administering a variety of medicines. Scientists have developed MDTs with better patient compliance and convenience as a result of recent technological advancements. When these tablets are placed in the mouth, they dissolve or disintegrate in the absence of extra water, making the administration of the active ingredients in the medication simple. The formulation's popularity and practicality led to the creation of multiple MDT technologies. MDTs are solid unit dosage forms that quickly dissolve in the mouth without the need for chewing or water. Orally disintegrating tablets, or MDTs, are advantageous, especially for young and elderlypeople who experience difficulty swallowing standard tablets and capsules. This article describes the various formulations and technologies used to speed up the dissolving or dispersion of tablets in the oral cavity. This review goes into great detail about MDT technologies that are based on lyophilization, molding, sublimation, and compaction. It also discusses methods for improving the MDT properties, like spray drying and the use of disintegrants. Furthermore covered are dissolution, experimental measurements of disintegration times, and taste-masking technologies.
