ROLE OF PHYTOCONSTITUENTS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF INFLAMMATION: A REVIEW
Shyam B. Deshani*, Prof. Bina Aghera, Dr. Chintankumar J. Tank
Abstract Inflammation is a fundamental biological response to harmful stimuli, playing a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of numerous chronic diseases such as arthritis, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions. While conventional anti-inflammatory drugs like NSAIDs and corticosteroids are widely used, their long-term use is often associated with significant side effects, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapeutic agents. Phytoconstituents, naturally occurring compounds derived from plants, have garnered considerable attention for their potent anti-inflammatory properties with fewer adverse effects. This review aims to provide an exhaustive analysis of various phytoconstituents utilized in inflammation management, elucidating their mechanisms of action, efficacy based on in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies, and potential synergistic effects when combined with conventional therapies. Through a systematic literature search across multiple databases, over 50 relevant studies were identified and synthesized. Key phytochemicals such as flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, and phenolic acids were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activities, highlighting their interactions with inflammatory cytokines, enzyme inhibition, antioxidant activity, and modulation of key signaling pathways like NF-κB and MAPK. The review also addresses challenges related to bioavailability, standardization, and safety, proposing future research directions to enhance the therapeutic potential of phytoconstituents. Overall, phytoconstituents present a promising frontier in the development of novel anti-inflammatory agents, offering a blend of efficacy and safety that aligns with the growing demand for natural and sustainable healthcare solutions.
